What makes you different? 

Customers have choices. Lots of them. We need to help the right customers to understand why we are the right choice for them. That means explaining what makes us different.

I know that many small business owners find this a challenge. This is where AI can come in.

AI is only as good as any prompt you give it. So we need to give Chat GBT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity or the tool of our choice really clear instructions for what we want. Remember garbage in garbage out!

How to prompt your AI tool.

The more specific your prompt the better result you are likely to get. To find what makes you different I would suggest that you identify two to three of your closest competitors. I have found that more than three dilutes the results so I suggest repeating the exercise if you want to include more competitors.

Give really clear instructions what you want your AI tool to do e.g

Please compare (I’m always polite) your business name with competitor 1, 2,3 (name them) Look at services offered, pricing, ethos, customer reviews, opening hours add anything else specific to you and your business.

What makes our insert name business different? How do we stand out from the crowd.

HINT: Asking the same question of more than one AI tool can present slightly different results so is worth experimenting with.

My experience

When I did this exercise recently I found the results hugely helpful. Of course the results drew heavily on our websites and other online data so may not be entirely objective. However, they are useful for helping us to see how we are talking about our business in comparison to how our competitors are talking about theirs.

The comparisons I did showed me the similarities and differences. It was the latter that really helped with communicating why people should choose us.

ACTION: We’re asking attendees at our meetings in September to explain what makes them different and suggest that you experiment with AI to find the answers.
